World Trade Centre Attacks | ![]() | September 11, 2001 will forever be etched in the minds of not only Americans, but the entire free world. The average man on the street, could not have anticipated the series of events that would occur on this fateful day. We all remember that at approximately quarter to nine in the morning the first attack occurred. Two al-Qaeda hijacked planes were deliberately crashed into the World Trade Center in New York. The WTC and other surrounding buildings were completely destroyed. |

Pentagon Attack | ![]() | In Washington, another hijacked plane was deliberately crashed into the Pentagon; the fourth airbus, crashed in Shansville Pennsylvania. It is believed that this plane was perhaps intended to crash into one of two significant government buildings, either the White House or the United States Capitol. |
Total Casualities | Analysts, estimated that approximately, 2,974 persons lost their lives on that fateful day. | |
Emergency Service Personel Casualities | ![]() | It has been estimated that 411 emergency service workers lost their lives in the line of duty. The breakdown is as follows – 341 firefighters, 02 paramedics, 23 police officers, 37 Port-Authority officers, 08 Emergency Medical Technicians. |
Fire Department Rescue Effort | ![]() | Two hundred units, half of the Fire Department of New York City (FDNY), were immediately deployed to the site. There were several inadequacies with the rescue response of all the emergency response units. This major deficiency in the rescue efforts has prompted the fire department ,along with the other emergency response units, to take major steps at improving communication at all levels within and across units. We trust that such steps would enhance the rescue system and allow for an improved rapid response interconnected emergency system. Altogether the Fire Department should be commended in its heoric efforts to rescue men and women and to ensure the safety of the general public. |
